ØRSNESVIKA

The new innovative tourist destination in Lofoten. From the old historical fishing village and upon the ruins of Ms. Agathe Andersens Caviar Factory that burnt down in 1962, a new exciting and innovative full-service travel destination for the active and adventurous traveller.

The small bays of Ørsnesvika and Tjønnvika are developed with cabins in one, two and three floors. The SeaShore hotel and reception area will be situated on the “Krambuodden” peninsula where the old fishing village was located in the old days. A walkway or  bridge connection southwards to Risholmen and onto the mainland west of Risholmen, opens up for hiking and exploration in an area not previously easy accessible.

ARCHITECTURE

A sustainable architectural expression mirroring the surrounding landscape, nature and historical roots of the area.  A “light footprint” or LID (Low Impact Development) where terrain interventions will be minimized. The cabins will be supported by thin columns or beams, bolted to the rock, or alternatively piled into the ocean floor.  Materials selection, prefabrication of units and sea transport are among the tools to be used to further emphasize sustainability of the project in the construction phase.

HISTORY

Ørsnesvika was in the old days known to have one of the best harbors for the fishing fleet. A number of fish landings and  fishermen’s cabins (“rorbuer”) was located in and around Ørsnesvika, and during the busiest years as many as 52 fishing boats with 260 fishermen landed their cod in Ørsnesvika  during the world famous Lofoten cod fishing winter season.

However; Ørsnesvika is probably best known for Agathe Andersen’s caviar factory. She started her small scale production in 1912, and expanded with a brand new factory building in 1920. Agathe Andersen’s caviar was well known and enjoyed throughout Norway, and even outside Norway. However, she kept the recipe as a secret treasure all to herself, and when she was mixing the ingredients of the caviar, everyone else was asked to leave.

Production ceased with the great fire in 1962. The recipe? We don’t know!
